What are Night Guards?
Night guards are custom-fitted oral appliances used to protect your teeth while you sleep. Typically, they're recommended for people who grind or clench their teeth, a condition known as bruxism. The constant grinding and clenching can significantly damage your teeth and lead to other oral health problems. Night guards act as a protective barrier between your top and bottom teeth, reducing the tension and providing relief from the pressure of clenching or grinding. They are usually made from durable plastic and are designed to comfortably fit the shape of your teeth.

Prevents Other Oral Health Issues
Beyond tooth damage and discomfort, chronic teeth grinding can lead to other oral health problems, including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and gum recession. By addressing the root cause of these issues, night guards can help prevent them from developing in the first place.
Reduces Pain and Discomfort
By reducing the pressure on your teeth and jaw, night guards can alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with bruxism. This includes jaw pain, headaches, and earaches. Over time, this can improve your sleep quality and overall wellbeing.
Protects Your Teeth
Night guards are primarily designed to protect your teeth from the harmful effects of grinding and clenching. They provide a protective barrier that prevents your teeth from rubbing against each other, reducing the risk of tooth damage, such as wear, chips, and fractures.

The Night Guard Treatment Process
0
1
Consultation and Examination
The first step in the night guard treatment process involves a comprehensive consultation and oral examination by Dr. Greg Kiene or Dr. Chris Merkley at Valor Dental. They will assess your oral health, discuss your symptoms, and determine if a night guard is the right solution for you. This may involve asking about your sleep habits, jaw discomfort, and any other related symptoms.

Impression and Fitting
If a night guard is deemed suitable, an impression of your teeth will be taken. This impression will be used to create a custom-fitted night guard that matches the unique contours of your teeth, ensuring optimal comfort and effectiveness. The process of creating your night guard typically takes about a week. Once your night guard is ready, you'll return to the office for a fitting. Adjustments will be made as necessary to ensure a perfect fit.

Follow-up and Care
After receiving your night guard, Dr. Kiene or Dr. Merkley will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your night guard and maintain your oral health. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to the night guard.
Preguntas frecuentes
To keep your night guard in good condition, rinse it with cool water immediately after each use. You can also brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild, non-abrasive soap. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic. It’s recommended to soak it in a denture cleaner or a specialized night guard cleaner once a week for a deeper clean. Always store it in its case when not in use to protect it from dust and bacteria. Regular cleaning helps prevent bacteria buildup and ensures your night guard lasts longer.
